High school seniors who reported vaping, but with no history of cigarette use, were more than four times as likely to take up smoking within a year as 12th graders who did not vape or smoke, according to a nationally representative study.

Among those who had never smoked a cigarette by the 12th grade (baseline), recent vapers were more likely to report past-year cigarette smoking at follow-up. This was even seen in responders who reported the highest possible level of perceived risk for cigarette smoking at baseline, reported Richard Miech, PhD, of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and colleagues.
