Research published in the Journal of Research in Pharmacy Practice has found that daily atorvastatin 40 mg for 6 months could help to reduce pulmonary artery pressure among patients with COPD.

Twenty-one patients received atorvastatin treatment (40 mg/day for 6 months) at random vs 21 patients in the control group who did not receive atorvastatin.

Patients who received atorvastatin saw a greater decrease in mean systolic pulmonary artery pressure (48.9 ± 3.3 mm Hg vs 38.4 ± 1.9 mmHg) compared to the control group (45.6 ± 3.1 versus 38.9 ± 2.4 mm Hg).

The researchers also found that patients who were treated with atorvastatin showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
