A new study of around 2,000 patients with acute asthma revealed women are 60% more likely to be hospitalized when being treated for the condition in the emergency department.
According to the findings, which were published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the exact reasons for the significantly higher hospitalization risk are unclear, but a number of factors could contribute, such as the influence of female sex hormones or differences in bronchial hyperresponsiveness between men and women.
