On May 20, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions voted to send the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act to the full Senate for action!  This legislation will  give the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority to regulate tobacco products. The legislation has already been passed by the US House of Representatives — now the Senate must pass it before it can be sent to President Obama, who has said he supports it.

Your senators needs to hear from you about how important it is that they vote for this legislation when it comes to the Senate floor and oppose weakening amendments. We know the tobacco industry will pull out all the stops and we need your Senator to stand up to them and work for the quick passage of this legislation.  Each day the Congress doesn’t act, more than 1,100 kids will become regular, daily smokers.  One- hird of them will die from a tobacco-related disease.  Unless Congress acts to protect our kids, Big Tobacco will continue to target and entice them with products like candy-flavored cigarettes.

Please help by sending a message to your senators to vote YES on the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act and NO to any weakening amendments.  The American Lung Association has made it easy to contact your senator; just go to www.lungusa.org and click on the link within the lead story. As RTs, you knowhow important this legislation is, so please contact your senators.
