Hamilton Medical Inc has received an Innovative Technology contract from healthcare performance improvement company Vizient Inc for its Hamilton-H900 humidifier.

Innovative Technology contracts are reserved for technologies that demonstrate an ability to enhance clinical care or patient safety, and those that improve an organization’s care delivery and business model. Since 2003, nearly 2200 new and innovative products and technologies have been submitted through the program, according to Hamilton Medical. The contract was based on a recommendation of the Hamilton-H900 by hospital representatives who serve on one of Vizient’s member-led councils.
“After a full review of the Hamilton-H900 Humidifier, Vizient’s member council agreed this solution offers an incremental benefit over other products and recommended it for an Innovative Technology contract. We are pleased to award this new contract to Hamilton Medical Inc,” said Debbie Archer, director of procurement and leader of Vizient’s Innovative Technology program.
The Hamilton-H900 humidifier comprises only two components, which are delivered preassembled and ready to use: The wall-heated breathing set and the humidifier base with the user interface. This saves time, increases efficiency and facilitates the handling of the humidifier, as well as reducing the risk of contamination, according to Hamilton Medical. The caregiver only needs to slide the water chamber into the humidifier and connect the breathing circuit to the patient, Hamilton Medical explained.
The breathing circuits for the Hamilton-H900 integrate the heater wires into the circuit wall. This eliminates the cold interface between heated breathing gas and ambient temperatures, and leads to significantly reduced condensation and rain-out effects in the breathing circuit. To perfectly adapt the humidification therapy to the individual patient and environmental conditions, the Hamilton-H900 allows for manual adjustment of the chamber temperature and temperature gradient. These adjustments can help avoid having too much condensation in the tubing.
Hamilton Medical reports that due to its ergonomic design, the Hamilton-H900’s user interface can be easily seen and operated from a standing position, and provides all the information the caregiver needs at a glance. The large, high-contrast LC display provides excellent readability, and the alarms are displayed with self-explanatory icons.
“Humidification is an important part of respiratory care. When we developed the Hamilton-H900, we talked to many clinicians to understand what they would improve in conventional humidification,” explains Bob Hamilton, President of Hamilton Medical, Inc, “Easier handling of circuits, cables and connections, an improved user interface, reduction of rain-out and increased safety were the most requested enhancements. We aimed at improving humidification in exactly these areas.”
