Respiratory viruses are the most common cause of community-acquired pneumonia in children, according to a study conducted by Etiology of Pneumonia in the Community (EPIC).

The findings of the study indicated that 81 percent of cases were caused by viruses, while only 8 percent were caused by bacteria with 7 percent by both virus and bacteria. Also it was brought in to notice that the leading cause of viral pneumonia in these children were the viruses respiratory syncytial virus or RSV and human rhinovirus , followed by human metapneumovirus (HMPV), adenovirus, parainfluenza virus and coronavirus.
