FluMist was only 5% effective in children last year, according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine reported by MedPage Today.

By contrast, the conventional inactivated-virus flu shot had effectiveness of 60% among children and 63% effectiveness against influenza A (H1N1) pdm09. All in all, children who received FluMist were more than twice as likely to contract the flu as children who received the inactivated virus vaccine.

Similar data were presented at last year’s Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices meeting in June, leading the committee to recommend against the live attenuated influenza vaccine for the 2016-2017 flu season.
