A Medscape commentary ponders a meta-analysis of Vitamin D and asthma patients.

Should asthmatic subjects take additional vitamin D to reduce the frequency of acute events and the requirement for oral corticosteroids? The authors of the cited publication state that the evidence that all asthmatics should take it is not yet clear. Nor is vitamin D supplementation recommended in asthma guidelines.

However, taking 400 IU/day is very unlikely to result in adverse events; is inexpensive; and, for asthmatic patients who have ever had an exacerbation, may be a consideration.
