Obesity was found to be a risk factor for 30-day readmission among young children recently hospitalized for asthma, according to Japanese researchers who studied more than 38,000 children.

Using a national inpatient database, they investigated the relationship between obesity and repeated admissions in children recently hospitalized with acute asthma. They obtained hospital discharge records for children, ages 3-8 years, hospitalized for asthma. Children with chronic medical conditions other than asthma and obesity were excluded from the cohort.

The data were collected from more than 1,000 hospitals covering 50% of all inpatient hospital admissions in Japan, which totalled approximately 7 million inpatient admissions annually.
