Researchers have found that chronic rhinitis is linked to greater 30-day hospital readmissions for patients with asthma or COPD, according to a study published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice.

A total of 858 of 4768 patients with asthma and 405 of 2176 patients with COPD were readmitted to the hospital ?1 within 30 days after initial discharge.

The frequency of early readmissions for asthma and COPD was significantly higher in patients with comorbid chronic allergic rhinitis (hazard ratio [HR], 4.4; 95% CI, 3.9-5.0 and HR, 2.4; 95% CI, 1.7-3.2, respectively; both P <.0001) or nonallergic rhinitis (HR 3.7; 95% CI, 2.9-4.9 and HR 2.6; 95% CI, 1.8-3.7, respectively; both P <.0001)) than patients without rhinitis.
