Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) have an overall threefold increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), with the highest risks being seen during the first year after diagnosis, a Canadian population-based study found.

Compared with the non-SSc population, patients with the disease had hazard ratios of 3.47 for VTE, 3.73 for pulmonary embolism (PE), and 2.96 for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), after adjusting for all potentially confounding variables, according to J. Antonio Avina-Zubieta, MD, PhD, of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and colleagues.
