According to a study in Plos One, a COPD diagnosis in a patient with bronchiectasis resulted in a 1.77-times increase in mortality risk compared to patients with bronchiectasis alone.

Medical records from 1,790 patients with non-cystic fibrosis BE between 2002 and 2011 were analyzed. In total, 158 of the patients also had COPD (8.8%).

Mortality in the COPD group … was found to be higher (35.9%) than in patients with non-cystic fibrosis BE alone (19%). The cause of death did not differ between the two groups and it was attributed to respiratory causes in the majority of cases (71.2%).
