The New York Times is reporting that a procedural bill passed today in the US Senate is laying the groundwork for the eventual repeal of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

The bill, which passed 51-48, “would allow [Republicans] to gut the healthcare law without the threat of a Democratic filibuster,” the Times reported.

From the NYT article:

The action by the Senate is essentially procedural, setting the stage for a special kind of legislation called a reconciliation bill. Such a bill can be used to repeal significant parts of the health law and, critically, is immune from being filibustered. Congress appears to be at least weeks away from voting on legislation repealing the law.

President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intention to submit his own bill to repeal Obamacare, pending confirmation of his Health and Human Services secretary Tom Price, the Times reported.
